Here it is the inaugural mock draft from foodandfootballandeverythingelse.blog

There are a few caveats that I have to make clear one I truly believe, or maybe I am just hoping against hope that the Browns do not take a QB first overall and either trade the pick while still staying in the top ten with two or taking the best player in the draft.  I am also assuming they sign a veteran QB in free agency.  Full disclosure I feel that there will be other trades in the first round but I am not going to predict them here.  I will also assume Cousins to Minnesota, Keenum to Denver and McCarron to the Browns.  So without further ado, here we go the inaugural mock draft.

  1. Cleveland Browns– Saquon Barkley RB Penn State, the Best all-around player in the draft
  2. New York Giants– Sam Darnold QB USC, the heir apparent to Eli.
  3. Indianapolis Colts-Bradley Chubb Edge Rusher NC State, This dude is a stud
  4. Cleveland Browns-Minkah Fitzpatrick Safety Alabama, Instantly makes the back end of your defense better
  5. Denver Broncos-Tremaine Edmunds Ilb Virginia Tech makes an already great defense younger
  6. New York Jets– Baker Mayfield QB Oklahoma, the most polarizing player in the draft, you either love him or hate him, I think he can be great for a franchise that needs a face.
  7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Marcus Davenport DE UTSA puts up Clowney like numbers at the combine and fills a definite need for Bucs.
  8. Chicago Bears-Quinten Nelson OL Notre Dame, Best Offensive Lineman in the draft and the Bears just hired his college Oline Coach.
  9. San Francisco 49ers-Denzel Ward CB Ohio State, best CB in the draft from the new DBU.  Bucks have put some studs in the NFL last few years.
  10. Oakland Raiders– Roquan Smith Ilb Georgia, Gruden goes defense in his first draft back and takes my favorite player in the draft Smith.  A sideline to sideline playmaker that will be great in the league for years to come.
  11. Miami Dolphins-Josh Rosen QB UCLA, I think the Dolphins are pumped that Rosen fell to 11 and I think Rosen is pumped he is going to play in warm weather Miami and not have to start right away.
  12. Cincinnati Bengals– Mike McGlinchey OT Notre Dame, Unanimous choice as an All-American at ND he is the second best O-lineman in the draft.
  13. Washington Redskins-Christian Wilkins DLine Clemson, Wilkins was a stud at Clemson that played in three college football playoffs he will be an awesome addition to the D in D.C.
  14. Green Bay Packers– Joshua Jackson CB Iowa, The Packers opt for JT Barrett’s favorite receiver, he had three picks in a blowout win vs. theBuckeyes. It also just seems right that an Iowa player ends up in Green Bay.
  15. Arizona Cardinals-Josh Allen QB Wyoming, missing out on the QB race in free agency the Cardinals get the big-armed Allen to throw to the ageless wonder, Fitzgerald.
  16. Baltimore Ravens-Calvin Ridley WR Alabama, Ravens opt for the speedster out of Tuscaloosa to shore up the receiving corp and give Flacco a number one receiver.
  17. Los Angles Chargers– Rashaan Evans ILB Alabama, if you need a linebacker The University of Alabama is a great place to start looking and the Chargers find another great one in Evans that has the ability to come in and start right away.
  18. Seattle Seahawks– Connor Williams OT Texas, the Seahawks break tradition and actually draft an offensive lineman instead of trying to make one out of a failed D-lineman or tight end.
  19. Dallas Cowboys-Courtland Sutton WR SMU, the Cowboys look right to their backyard and pluck a great wide receiver from SMU in Sutton.
  20. Detroit Lions-Clelin Ferrell DE Clemson, Another dominating DE from Clemson, the reason why they have elevated themselves to the top echelon of college football.
  21. Buffalo Bills-Da’Ron Payne DT Alabama, the third defensive player taken from the Tide and another that will be a solid player in the league for years to come.
  22. Buffalo Bills-Orlando Brown OT Oklahoma, Really good feet on Brown will be able to contribute right away.
  23. Los Angles Rams- Arden Key OLB LSU, Another SEC linebacker that can play right away.  Key is a good combination of size and speed.
  24. Carolina Panthers-Braden Smith OG Auburn, great interior lineman to help protect Cam Newton.
  25. Tennesse Titans-Isaiah Wynn OG Georgia, big time O-lineman to help propel the running game in Tennesee.
  26. Atlanta Falcons-Christian Kirk WR Texas A&M, speedy slot receiver form A&M to go alongside Julio Jones for QB Matt Ryan.
  27. New Orleans Saints-Mike Gesicki TE Penn State, Combine freak at TE moved him up the draft and position board.
  28. Pittsburgh Steelers-Josey Jewell ILB Iowa, great fit for Pittsburgh getting a run stuffing linebacker out of Iowa.
  29. Jacksonville Jaguars-Anthony Miller WR Memphis, a big WR threat for Bortles if Jax can become a little more explosive on the outside a Super Bowl win is not far off for this franchise.
  30. Minnesota Vikings-Billy Price OC Ohio State tore a pec muscle at the combine but he will still be a great addition to the Vikings Oline.
  31. New England Patriots-M.J. Stewart CB North Carolina, will help not only on defense but take some pressure off of Edlemen in return game.  Belichick loves guys that are versatile.
  32. Philadelphia Eagles-Ronald Jones II RB USC, versatile back out of USC will add to the diverse offense in Philly.

There you have it the first round according to me.  The only thing I do see happening is the Browns trading out of 1, the Bills trading up for a QB, and New England trading their pick.  That will be for the next mock 2.0. I used to make fun of the guys who did this but this is really hard to do.

This weekend at the WGC in Mexico Lefty went back to the winner’s circle for the first time in 4.5 years.  He was awesome off of the tee and his short game was magical as always.  Phil Mickelson is gaining momentum heading into the last few tournaments before the Masters.  This year’s Masters is shaping up to be anyone’s tournament, it could come down to who makes the least amount of mistakes and who gets hot late.  There could be as many as 10-15 golfers in contention come Sunday.  I for one cannot wait!

I made ribs this weekend and the recipe is in Friday’s edition so I will just post a couple of before and after pictures:

NFL Combine

The NFL Combine where guys are running around in tights jumping, catching, and lifting.  100s of old guys in the stands watching and judging every move, answer, and measurement.  Day after day and month after month of studying and the teams still get it wrong!  The NFL Combine is an excuse for all executives of the NFL to gather in Indianapolis at the end of February.  The NFL Combine is the most overrated event in the NFL calendar.  Since the Combine is here I might as well give my plan for the Browns, I believe that I have laid this out before but here goes.  First, let’s recap the assets that the Browns are armed with this offseason:

  •  $117 million under the cap
  •  12 picks in this year’s draft including 5 in the first two rounds

They need to go out in free agency and sign a veteran QB that can lead a team that is on the cusp of being good.  I read all of the time how we need this type of QB or this type of QB to win championships.  We need to slow down a bit here and focus on building a team that can compete before we start talking about championships.  There is one thing that I am positive of, no matter what level of football you are playing winning championships is done by running the ball and playing great defense.  The QB is important, but look at the playoffs this year, 7 out of the 12 were drafted in the first round, but the two that played in the Super Bowl was not drafted in first round.  Three out of the four teams in the conference championships played outstanding defense and that is what got them there.  So I do not put as much stock in drafting a QB as some do, and my plan to win will reflect that and will be the sticking point for most of you.

6 Step Plan to Make The Browns Competitive:

Step 1:  Go out and sign either Cousins or McCarron, McCarron will be cheaper but money is no object this offseason.

Step 2: Sign a lockdown CB the secondary needs a facelift and getting a guy that can play man to man on a number one receiver is paramount.

Step 3: Work a deal to trade the number one pick, but stay in the top ten.  Try and pick up a first in 2019 and another second rounder this year.

Step 4: Draft Minkah Fitzpatrick and Roquan Smith in with the two top ten picks.  The defense just got infinitely better.  Fitzpatrick solidifies the backend of the defense and Smith adds a great Ray Lewislike LB to an already good core.  If you watched the college football playoff Smith was the most impressive player on the field during both games.

Step 5:  If one of the top 6 receivers falls to the end of the first round trade back up, into the first round with your multitude of second rounders and get a playmaker for your new QB.

Step 6: With the rest of our picks take the best player available at that spot, we need playmakers and help at all positions.

If we can not make any trades with number one or to trade back into the first round, I am still of the opinion that we take Fitzpatrick number one and Smith number four.  If we can not make a trade we still have three-second rounders 33, 35, and 64, get playmakers during the second day.

Would love seeing these two making plays in Brown and Orange next year!!

The reason that I am not high on taking a QB in the first round is that I do not believe that any of them are transcendent talents, ala Eli, Big Ben, or Peyton.  The other reason that I advocate getting a Veteran FA QB instead of drafting another one in the first round is that we have wasted too many picks on QBs and passed up on playmakers.  Another reason is that our offensive coordinator Todd Haley has never developed players in a system, he has always been handed all-pros the two stops he was successful, Pittsburgh and Arizona.

There is a little pizza place in Avon called In Forno, and it is fantastic.  Erin and I went there and had a wonderful time, it is family owned which we absolutely love and they make you feel apart of the family as soon as you walk in there.  They specialize in wood-fired pizzas and salads, they do have some beers but alcohol selection is limited.  We both had arugula salads which were fantastic.  Erin had the pepperoni pizza and I had the Di Parma, both were excellent with fresh ingredients.  The pepperoni on the pizza was big and you could tell it wasn’t like the pepperoni from the chain pizza places.  The Di Parma has tomato sauce, prosciutto, grated mozzarella, garlic, olive oil, and arugula, all ingredients were fresh and very tasty.  In Forno is a little pricey but I believe it is well worth it once and a while.  I would not go there every time I wanted pizza but when I want a good specialty pizza we are definitely going to In Forno.  On the Shamrock scale, I give In Forno ☘️☘️☘️ for alcohol selection lacking and being a little expensive.

This weekend Erin is going away on Saturday, so every time she goes away I make her a treat so that she will come back to me and Hank. This weekend I am making ribs on the Big Green Egg, they are her favorite, plus it gives me a chance to practice for Easter and the neighborhood rib burn off this summer.  We bought three slabs of baby back ribs at Costco this week.  The rub I am going to use on the ribs is Three Little Pigs All-Purpose and Three Little Pigs Sweet.  I will prepare the ribs by squirting yellow mustard all over them and rubbing it on them and then adding the two rubs.  After I get the Big Green Egg to 300* I will place the ribs in a V rack and place the V rack in a drip pan, I will then cook them for 2.5-3hrs or until the meat registers an internal temperature of 190*.  Then I will raise the Egg temperature to 500* place the ribs directly on the grid and baste with the BBQ sauce every few minutes for 5-7 minutes.  Then I will transfer to a platter and serve to Erin immediately.  The final product will be pictured here on Sunday.

As of this writing, there are 27 days until opening day.

Tiger is Back!!

I am going to discuss two sports topics today along with a review of a local establishment and a preview of the ribs I am going to make Erin as her prize for coming home to Hank and me.  I am watching the replay from SanDiego and the Farmer’s Insurance Open, and seeing Tiger swinging the club well again is great for golf.  When Tiger is competing in tournament championships golf is better because of it.  Tiger was arguably the most dominant athlete of all time during the stretch between 2000-2007.  No one dominated a single sport the way he did, he won majors by double-digit strokes.  Tiger has 14 major championships with 13 coming between 2000-2007, he won the Masters in 1997.  In my opinion, Tiger changed the type of athlete that played golf.  Prior to Tiger’s dominant stretch, your average golfer was a middle-aged white or European man that most of us could not identify with.  Tiger comes along as a young, energetic, African-American man who ushered in an entirely new demographic of golf fan.  Sponsored by the largest athletic apparel company in the world, Nike, and he was an in every living room in America on Sundays in the summer.  I firmly believe that if it were not for the “Tiger” effect the golf world would have never had the likes of a Dustin Johnson.  Tiger forced other golfers to be better, he was at the cutting edge of training and nutrition and he forced other golfers to change the way they trained if they wanted to keep up with him.  Tiger made it cool to be a golfer, with his red shirts on Sunday, 300 yard drives, and his overall dominate play.  Tiger was the biggest star of the early 2000’s because since the incident in 2009 every time Tiger picks up a golf club he is the number one golf story.  Tiger has only played sparingly since 2009 and when he has played it hasn’t been well but he is a story at every tournament and when he is coming back.  I think he is healthy and his swing is back, I hope he eases his way back into the season and doesn’t rush so he can maintain his health.

I think Tiger will be good again but for those that think that he will be the old dominate Tiger are kidding themselves.  Also, if Tiger is not as dominant as he was before it does not mean that there is anything wrong with him.  First, Tiger is 42 years old and hasn’t been healthy in 10 years, the last major he won he had a torn ACL and broken fibula.  I have just entered my 40’s and can tell you there are things that hurt in the morning that did not when I was 39, so age will affect Tiger for sure.  Second, the competition is 100x better now than it was in the early 2000’s.  Speith, DJ, Rory, Fowler, Rose are all great players and capable of winning each and every tournament they enter.  When Tiger was at his most dominate his major competition was Phil Mickelson and everyone else was a distant third.  I hope in 2019 Tiger is back to 100%, it will be fun to see him in groups with the aforementioned younger champions.  Here’s looking forward to a great 2018 golf season and the return of Tiger!

The baseball writers have turned the Hall of Fame into a yearly joke.  These old crotchety writers need to get over themselves, the last few classes while they have been decent, the story is more about the guys they are leaving out.  Baseball needs to step in and do something about them leaving out the guys from the steroid era.  Barry Bonds and Rodger Clemens are two of the greatest players of all time and definitely deserve to be in the Hall.   Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa who were both on PEDs brought baseball back with their home run chase in 1998 after baseball went on strike in 1994. They need to construct a new wing in the Hall and call it players from the steroid era, but whatever they do these guys need to be in the Hall of Fame.  If the conspiracy theorists are correct and baseball turned a blind eye because these guys were hitting HRs and driving up attendance and ratings, well then baseball really needs to step in and do something for the guys who brought fans back to baseball.

This years class was ok, Chipper Jones, Vladimir Guerrero, and Jim Thome all were good players in their own right.  Chipper was the #1 draft pick in the amateur draft by the Atlanta Braves.  He played 18 years in the big leagues primarily at third base, he was an 8x All-Star, MVP, batting title winner, and played in three World Series winning the 1995 WS.  He had a decent career, but I do have one funny story about my man Chipper.  My family was at the Atlanta Braves game in the summer of 1999, a couple years earlier a story broke that he had impregnated a Hooters waitress, well my brother Mike came to the game armed with his information and it just so happens we are sitting on the third base side.  Michael berates Chipper the entire game, hurling barbs at him using his given name Larry, mind you Michael at the time is like 14 years old.  If you think that I have some useless knowledge in my brain about sports, I do not hold a candle to Michael.

Vladimir Guererro is the best player in the class, I remember watching him bat and no matter where they threw it he could hit it and hit it hard.  Vlad hit HRs on balls that bounced to the plate!  Vlad was a 9x all-star, MVP, and an 8x silver slugger winner.  Vlad played on the last great Montreal Expo team in 1994 that was probably going to the World Series but the season was cut short by players strike.

Jim Thome is the name in this class that confuses me, in my opinion, he is nowhere near a first ballot Hall of Famer.  He was a 5x all-star and a silver slugger award winner, that is all.  He batted in one of the most prolific lineups with the Indians in the mid-1990s.  He was never the best player on his team, he did play in the World Series in 1995 and 1997. Jim did hit 612 home runs but struck out 2548 times in 22 years.  He was never higher than 4th in MVP voting, I just do not understand why he gets first ballot status and they continue to leave Bonds and Clemens out.

Omar Vizquel was the biggest snub from this class and to make matters worse he only garnered 30% of the vote.  The guy is the greatest defensive shortstop to have ever played the game.  The plays he made were unreal, watch the clip below for evidence.

This was in the World Series folks!  The guy made play after play for the Tribe whether it be on offense or defense.  He was a 3x all-star and an 11x gold glove winner.  The reason he was only a 3x all-star was because of Derek Jeter and the Yankees.  Jeter couldn’t carry Vizquel’s glove but because he played for the Yankees the media loved him.  One day the writers will reward defense and not just these guys that hit 600 home runs but strikeout 2500 times.

I stopped at Frank and Ellie’s today for the Thursday review.  I thought it was going to be more along the lines of a bar/grill, but it was not.  I walked in and they had nine different drafts but they were all domestics so I just ordered a Miller Lite.  I asked the waitress for a menu and she said that they do not have one and pointed to a little board on the wall.  I got two Frank’s burgers which were ok, they were made on an oven grill.  I was a little disappointed by what I thought I was walking into, but after I came to grips with what it is, it is a fine local establishment that I will be back to after dinner!

Lastly, Erin has been out of town nine of the last ten days for work and Hank and I miss her.  Shout out to Tami, Julie, and Jack for taking care of Hank while I was at school, he couldn’t go to daycare because of his damn puppy warts!  Thank you for proving once again we live in an awesome neighborhood!  Erin gets back tonight around midnight, so I decided to make her favorite ribs on Sunday.  I am going to make Barbecued Beef ribs.  I am going to need slabs of beef ribs, 1/2 cup basic BBQ rub, 1 cup basic BBQ sauce.  First, I am going to season ribs on all sides with the rub, then set the Big Green Egg to indirect cooking at 300*.  I am going to place the ribs on a V rack in a 9×13 drip pan lined with aluminum foil on the grid.  The ribs will cook for 2 1/2-3 hours, until tender or 190*F internal temperature.   Then, I will take Ribs off and raise the temperature of the EGG to 500*F.  Then I will place the ribs directly on the grid basting with the sauce every few minutes for 5-7 minutes until they are covered with sauce.  Serves 4.

Ingredients for a Basic BBQ Sauce:

  1. 2 15 oz cans of tomato sauce
  2. 2 cups Apple Cider Vinegar
  3. 1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce
  4. 1 cup Brown Sugar
  5. 1 tsp Kosher Salt
  6. 1 tsp Black Pepper
  7. 1/2 tsp celery seed
  8. 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  9. 2 tsp smoked paprika
  10. 1 tsp ground cloves
  11. 1 tsp garlic powder
  12. 1 tsp onion powder
  13. 1 chipotle pepper in adobo

Place the tomato sauce, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and brown sugar in a medium saucepan and mix well.

Wisk the salt, pepper, celery seed, cinnamon, paprika, cloves, garlic powder, onion powder, and chipotle together in a small bowl until completely blended.  Add to the saucepan and mix well.  On the stove top simmer the sauce over low heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until sauce thickens.  Remove the Chipotle with a slotted spoon and serve.

Ingredients for the Basic BBQ Rub:

  1. 3 tbs sweet paprika
  2. 1 1/2 tsp celery seed
  3. 2 tsp garlic powder
  4. 2 tsp cayenne pepper
  5. 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  6. 2 tbs Kosher Salt
  7. 1 tbs black pepper
  8. 1/4 cup Brown Sugar

Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and mix well.  You can store in an airtight container for up to 3 months.

That will be my Sunday of cooking I can’t wait to get back out there this Sunday and fire up the Big Green Egg!
