Here it is the inaugural mock draft from foodandfootballandeverythingelse.blog

There are a few caveats that I have to make clear one I truly believe, or maybe I am just hoping against hope that the Browns do not take a QB first overall and either trade the pick while still staying in the top ten with two or taking the best player in the draft.  I am also assuming they sign a veteran QB in free agency.  Full disclosure I feel that there will be other trades in the first round but I am not going to predict them here.  I will also assume Cousins to Minnesota, Keenum to Denver and McCarron to the Browns.  So without further ado, here we go the inaugural mock draft.

  1. Cleveland Browns– Saquon Barkley RB Penn State, the Best all-around player in the draft
  2. New York Giants– Sam Darnold QB USC, the heir apparent to Eli.
  3. Indianapolis Colts-Bradley Chubb Edge Rusher NC State, This dude is a stud
  4. Cleveland Browns-Minkah Fitzpatrick Safety Alabama, Instantly makes the back end of your defense better
  5. Denver Broncos-Tremaine Edmunds Ilb Virginia Tech makes an already great defense younger
  6. New York Jets– Baker Mayfield QB Oklahoma, the most polarizing player in the draft, you either love him or hate him, I think he can be great for a franchise that needs a face.
  7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Marcus Davenport DE UTSA puts up Clowney like numbers at the combine and fills a definite need for Bucs.
  8. Chicago Bears-Quinten Nelson OL Notre Dame, Best Offensive Lineman in the draft and the Bears just hired his college Oline Coach.
  9. San Francisco 49ers-Denzel Ward CB Ohio State, best CB in the draft from the new DBU.  Bucks have put some studs in the NFL last few years.
  10. Oakland Raiders– Roquan Smith Ilb Georgia, Gruden goes defense in his first draft back and takes my favorite player in the draft Smith.  A sideline to sideline playmaker that will be great in the league for years to come.
  11. Miami Dolphins-Josh Rosen QB UCLA, I think the Dolphins are pumped that Rosen fell to 11 and I think Rosen is pumped he is going to play in warm weather Miami and not have to start right away.
  12. Cincinnati Bengals– Mike McGlinchey OT Notre Dame, Unanimous choice as an All-American at ND he is the second best O-lineman in the draft.
  13. Washington Redskins-Christian Wilkins DLine Clemson, Wilkins was a stud at Clemson that played in three college football playoffs he will be an awesome addition to the D in D.C.
  14. Green Bay Packers– Joshua Jackson CB Iowa, The Packers opt for JT Barrett’s favorite receiver, he had three picks in a blowout win vs. theBuckeyes. It also just seems right that an Iowa player ends up in Green Bay.
  15. Arizona Cardinals-Josh Allen QB Wyoming, missing out on the QB race in free agency the Cardinals get the big-armed Allen to throw to the ageless wonder, Fitzgerald.
  16. Baltimore Ravens-Calvin Ridley WR Alabama, Ravens opt for the speedster out of Tuscaloosa to shore up the receiving corp and give Flacco a number one receiver.
  17. Los Angles Chargers– Rashaan Evans ILB Alabama, if you need a linebacker The University of Alabama is a great place to start looking and the Chargers find another great one in Evans that has the ability to come in and start right away.
  18. Seattle Seahawks– Connor Williams OT Texas, the Seahawks break tradition and actually draft an offensive lineman instead of trying to make one out of a failed D-lineman or tight end.
  19. Dallas Cowboys-Courtland Sutton WR SMU, the Cowboys look right to their backyard and pluck a great wide receiver from SMU in Sutton.
  20. Detroit Lions-Clelin Ferrell DE Clemson, Another dominating DE from Clemson, the reason why they have elevated themselves to the top echelon of college football.
  21. Buffalo Bills-Da’Ron Payne DT Alabama, the third defensive player taken from the Tide and another that will be a solid player in the league for years to come.
  22. Buffalo Bills-Orlando Brown OT Oklahoma, Really good feet on Brown will be able to contribute right away.
  23. Los Angles Rams- Arden Key OLB LSU, Another SEC linebacker that can play right away.  Key is a good combination of size and speed.
  24. Carolina Panthers-Braden Smith OG Auburn, great interior lineman to help protect Cam Newton.
  25. Tennesse Titans-Isaiah Wynn OG Georgia, big time O-lineman to help propel the running game in Tennesee.
  26. Atlanta Falcons-Christian Kirk WR Texas A&M, speedy slot receiver form A&M to go alongside Julio Jones for QB Matt Ryan.
  27. New Orleans Saints-Mike Gesicki TE Penn State, Combine freak at TE moved him up the draft and position board.
  28. Pittsburgh Steelers-Josey Jewell ILB Iowa, great fit for Pittsburgh getting a run stuffing linebacker out of Iowa.
  29. Jacksonville Jaguars-Anthony Miller WR Memphis, a big WR threat for Bortles if Jax can become a little more explosive on the outside a Super Bowl win is not far off for this franchise.
  30. Minnesota Vikings-Billy Price OC Ohio State tore a pec muscle at the combine but he will still be a great addition to the Vikings Oline.
  31. New England Patriots-M.J. Stewart CB North Carolina, will help not only on defense but take some pressure off of Edlemen in return game.  Belichick loves guys that are versatile.
  32. Philadelphia Eagles-Ronald Jones II RB USC, versatile back out of USC will add to the diverse offense in Philly.

There you have it the first round according to me.  The only thing I do see happening is the Browns trading out of 1, the Bills trading up for a QB, and New England trading their pick.  That will be for the next mock 2.0. I used to make fun of the guys who did this but this is really hard to do.

This weekend at the WGC in Mexico Lefty went back to the winner’s circle for the first time in 4.5 years.  He was awesome off of the tee and his short game was magical as always.  Phil Mickelson is gaining momentum heading into the last few tournaments before the Masters.  This year’s Masters is shaping up to be anyone’s tournament, it could come down to who makes the least amount of mistakes and who gets hot late.  There could be as many as 10-15 golfers in contention come Sunday.  I for one cannot wait!

I made ribs this weekend and the recipe is in Friday’s edition so I will just post a couple of before and after pictures:

A lot to discuss today, we have the government shutdown, a smorgasbord of food I made today for the week, and the NFL.  This government shutdown is one of the most ridiculous things in the history of our government!  The federal government has been a middle school playground for about 9 years now.  Basically, Democrats and Republicans look at each other and say, “You wouldn’t let us do this so we are going to block you from doing that!”  The only people who get hurt when Congress fights is you and I.  This government shutdown in which the Senate is in charge of fixing is unforgivable.  The men and women of Congress are still getting paid while thousands of government workers that depend on getting a check go without.  What is the incentive for Congress to settle this, their lifestyle is not being changed at all, in fact, I saw where they adjourned at 10pm on Sunday.  The President needs to step in and demand that they get this done before anyone goes home, I do not care if the vote comes at 3am.  They need to get this done for the government workers that are not getting paid and get these people what they have earned.  The reasons for the shutdown I am not going to get into because this is not a political blog, but when Congress is screwing with the American people I feel the need to write about it.

I believe Congress needs term limits and also if there is a government shutdown the top people in the three branches of government, the legislative, executive, and the judicial need to be the first to see their paychecks and benefits, that the American public pays for, cut off.  Let’s see how they like it when they take their child to the Doctor and do not have insurance to pay for it.  Let them live as so many of their constituents live.  The other is term limits, we need term limits for Congress.  I am tired of reading about these Congressmen and women that have been there for 25-30 years, we need some new blood in there to inject some energy and enthusiasm.  Right now Congress cannot get anything done because they are too worried about getting re-elected instead of doing what is right for the American people.  The fighting between the two parties has to stop so that the country can advance.  As long as our elected leaders keep fighting with each other and doing things the same way they always have we will always be stuck in the same rut that we are in right now.  In the midterm elections, we as Americans need to send a message to our elected leaders that we will not sit by and watch as they continue to get rich and the population gets crapped on.  I understand that these are amendments to the constitution and would take a 2/3rd vote to change them and Congress is in charge of that so it is probably not happening.  Just get out and vote!

I was watching the news this morning and the moderator brought up a Senator from each of the parties at separate times.  Both men, when asked about the shutdown instead of offering up a solution, tried to assign blame to the other party.  We have dissolved as a country to a place that is more concerned with who’s fault it is rather than how can we fix it.  People ask me all the time why I love sports so much and I’ll tell you when you are in competition and on a team if something goes wrong you do not have time to point fingers and look to blame someone you need to move on fix it and do it better the next time.  The United States of America would be a better place if our elected officials treated their job more as a team rather than competing against each other.

Enough with that heavy talk, I cannot believe I just wasted 500 words on them.  Today Erin left for Dallas, she will have been gone for 9 out of the last 10 days when she gets home Thursday night.  At least I’ll have Hank with me this week as he was at his Grandparents last week, thanks, Mark and Barb.  Today was food prep day for the week and it was awesome, Hank and I had the oven going and The Big Green Egg going, we even snuck a walk in there somewhere.  First, I made, with Erin’s help before we went to church and I took her to the airport, a pork tenderloin wrapped in bacon and filled with blue cheese and potatoes and carrots, that will be lunch for the week.  After that, I started The Big Green Egg and let it warm up while Hank and I took a walk through the neighborhood.  It was nice seeing more people out since it was almost 50*, rather than being bitterly cold like it was in early January.  When the Green Egg got to temperature we threw a sirloin on and grilled it up about 4 minutes on each side then it was done.  That will be dinner this week, tomorrow I’ll make bacon and brussel sprouts with it and Tuesday broccoli.  For dinner tonight I had a cauliflower pizza,  which is one of my all-time favorites, the toppings were cheese, pepperoni, and red and green peppers.  It was fantastic!

Tomorrow morning I am planning on getting on the Peloton bike at 5am.  Check my Twitter and Facebook to see if it happens.

Super LII is set Tom Brady and the Patriots will take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Minnesota.  Brady is going for his sixth title and second in a row, while the Eagles are relying on a stout defense and a backup QB to try and capture the title.  I am looking forward to the game and the chess match that will ensue between the two teams.  Rob Gronkowski’s health will be a huge question in the next two weeks.  If the Patriots do not have Gronk I think the Eagles can shut New England down and win the game.  Foles will have to protect the ball to get it done though.  I will have a winner for you the Friday before the Super Bowl.  Vegas opened the line at Patriots -6.5.

Busy, Busy, Busy!!

Another weekend in the books with a lot to talk about.  I am going to start with the attacks on the NFL.  If you read Twitter or any news outlet they would have you believe that the players kneeling for the anthem are the cause of the falling ratings.  I am sure that it is a slim part of the rating drop, but not the major reason.  I will, as a veteran give my opinion on the matter as I have been asked to since this protest started, I’m not saying as a veteran that my opinion matters more than yours because it does not.  The reason I label myself a veteran is to disprove these talking heads that all veterans are feeling disrespected when NFL players kneel for the anthem.  I myself will stand every time they play the anthem but that is my choice.  That is what my fellow soldiers and I fought for was freedom.  I did not go to Iraq to protect America’s freedoms only to come back and tell you how to exercise those freedoms.  So whether you want to kneel for the anthem or want to feel disrespected by those that do kneel during the anthem, go ahead it is your choice.  Now on to the people that say if the players had another job they wouldn’t be able to get away with that, no they wouldn’t but they are blessed to be the best in the world at what they do.  People including the President of The United States were calling for owners to kick off the players that were kneeling.  Good luck with that the number one reason NFL owners buy a team is to win. I have used this example before, Tom Brady could go out and urinate in the middle of the field and Bob Kraft is not going to cut him. Why? He is the greatest QB of all time.  If you are really good at what you do and in this case one of the top 1% of all the people that can do your job, you can use that platform to stage a protest if you want.

What I really loved is when anyone wanted to point out low attendance at NFL games the first picture they used was Browns stadium as they were in the midst of a 0-16 season, surprise, surprise no one was showing up to watch that garbage.   Which leads me to the real reason for the rating drop, the poor product on the field and the fans are tired of watching one team always win.  I will touch on the latter first.  Dynasties are bad for sports, no one wants to watch one team and in this case, a couple individuals dominate week after week and year after year.  The Patriots are arguably the greatest dynasty ever.  In an era of free agency and the salary cap, they have worked magic to keep this well-oiled machine running.  Tom Brady taking a couple pay cuts also helped, but that is an example of a player recognizing and doing what needed to be done to win. When your favorite team, and in the NFL the loyalty to your team does not run as deep as it does in college football, is out of it most guys find something else to do on Sunday besides watch their team or another.   It is my opinion people are tired of watching the Patriots win year after year and that has led to a decrease in the ratings.

The next reason that the ratings are declining is the poor product on the field.  There are way too many awful teams to keep people interested.  The teams are out of the playoff hunt after 4 or 5 weeks and then you are basically rooting for them to lose the rest of their games to get the #1 draft pick.  In the NFL, you either want your team to be at the top or the bottom, to be in the middle is awful you are not good enough to be in the playoffs and you are not bad enough to get a really good pick.  Purgatory is the worst!

I’ll get back to more football talk when I give you winners for the Championship games.  On Friday I got home from work and little did I know that was when the physical work would begin.  As you recall we painted our house last weekend and this week we got new carpet installed in our great room.  Therefore, all of the furniture was moved out of the great room and in the dining room and now needed to be moved back.  My wife wanted to rearrange the great room so all the furniture was not going back where we had it before, this was a scary proposition as my wife tends to change her mind quite a few times before she settles on something.  We have this buffet that weighs roughly 1000lbs and she wanted it on the opposite wall.  I told her I would move it but it was not getting moved again for a month.  I moved it and by the grace of God she loved it, so it is staying!  Then I moved the rest of the furniture back to the great room too.  Also, by the way, cancel the Amber alert we found the Christmas plates!  They were in a trunk we had put them in last year when my mother-in-law gave them to us.  Backstory Erin wanted to use them about a month ago, and after we thought we had looked everywhere and had lost them, we found them.

On Friday, Erin made a perfect pot roast and it was delicious!  Go to her facebook page and take a look, she posted pictures of it, and why not if it doesn’t get posted it doesn’t happen right? She had carrots, onions, and a 5lb roast in the dutch oven for about 5 hours and it was fantastic.  She is traveling to New York this week and I am sure glad I have that for lunch/dinner for this week.  On that note Hank and I are going to be baching it this week, so say an extra prayer for us that we survive the week.  On Saturday Erin went with our sister-in-law Catey and her three daughters to Disney on Ice, I drove Erin downtown and then met my brother at Buffalo Wild Wings to wait till the show was over.  It was awesome hanging out with Pat just talking about life and different things, even though we have always been pretty different I always learn from him everytime we talk.  After that, we watched the NFL playoff game at our neighbor’s house and called it a night.  Hank, our dog was up most of the night, he was jumping up and sitting up straight in our bed staring out the window, so if Hank is up I am also up, thanks, Hank I’m working on about 2 hours sleep right now.

We got a Peloton bike and it is awesome!  I have done 5 classes on it and I have loved them all!  I forgot how much I enjoy a good spin class.  This coupled with curbing my sugar intake, you are going to see a new Charley in 2018!  I highly recommend getting one of these bikes if you enjoy riding at all.  In the winter it is awesome I jump on for 20-30 minutes and am done.  We set it up in the office so while we are riding we can look out the window, listen to music and the next thing you know you’ve ridden for 20 minutes and rode 5.5 miles!

After a successful bowl season, the NFL playoffs have not been kind to FF&E.  As we stand right now, we are 3-6 so far with a couple of brutal beats.  The AFC Championship is pitting the Jacksonville Jaguars vs. the New England Patriots, who are a 9 point favorite.  In the NFC Championship the Minnesota Vikings at the Philadelphia Eagles who are a 3.5 point underdog.  These games are a little fresh and I will have some winners at the end of the week.  The QB matchups look like this Brady vs Bortles and Folk vs Keenum, who would have guessed that at the beginning of the season?

If you are looking for something to watch on TV tomorrow the Cavs are hosting the Golden State Warriors at 8:00pm on TNT.  The Cavs are a 5 point underdog.

No worries Pitchers and Catchers report in 32 days, on Fat Tuesday, February 13, 2018. Let’s Go, Tribe!!

Tomorrow is also the remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. a great civil rights leader.  Tomorrow is a time to remember as the great Dr. King said: “Darkness can not drive out darkness; only light can do that.  Hate can not drive out hate; only love can do that.”
