We Live in the Grey Area of Life

As I read my Facebook/Twitter timelines it occurs to me that Nike using Colin Kaepernick as their spokesperson has really riled some people up.  Let’s boil this down to what Kaepernick has done:

  1. He exercised his right to free speech and to peacefully protest police brutality, this was not protesting the anthem or the flag, that was just the stage that he used same as Tommie Smith and John Carlos in Mexico in 1968.
  2. He basically made himself a pariah in the NFL because he wasn’t good enough to be that big of a distraction and still be a starting QB in the NFL.
  3. He has continued his work even while being out of the league by donating to police training and helping to reduce excessive force and racial profiling.
  4. Now Nike has dropped an ad campaign with Kaepernick with the title “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything”

What Kaepernick did by peacefully protesting is what America is all about.  Is America great? You better believe it, but at the same time, America also has some flaws that we need to work on.  Kaepernick put his entire livelihood on the line in the same vein as Muhammad Ali, Jackie Robinson, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Tommie Smith, and John Carlos.  Kaepernick was bringing awareness to a problem in American society that needed attention and had the stage of the NFL to do it.  The peaceful protest leads to Kaepernick being an outcast in the eyes of the NFL.  It turned out Kaepernick wasn’t a good enough QB to still be in the league with the distraction he would have brought to the team.  Colin has not played an NFL game in two years, because he decided that his cause was more important than his playing career.  Kaep has proven that he is dedicated to his cause by continuing to raise money for excessive force training and racial profiling.  Two days ago Nike launched an ad campaign depicting Kaepernick with the saying “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything”

The outrage to this ad has been unbelievable, I had a 2 hour Facebook discussion about it and I was essentially agreeing with this person the whole time.  Here is the problem people want a 100% win about everything.  They need a black and white answer to every question, well guess what people we live in an intensely grey world.  I was reading this morning and people were all up in arms about the way Kaepernick was exercising his rights and I also read veteran responses answering “I did not protect your freedoms so that I could tell you how to use them.” This is America there are no 100% wins that is because we have freedom and are not run by a police state.

America was founded by a group of immigrant protestors that were tired of being oppressed by England, and they wanted change.  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. lead peaceful protests all around the south as part of the civil rights movement to exact change.  Peaceful protests are a great part of American history and also what makes America great. What also makes America great is the fact that we can have these discussions where no one is right but that we also do not have to fear for our lives because we disagree.  In America Kaepernick is allowed to peacefully protest, Nike is allowed to hire him as their spokesperson, and if you do not like that you are allowed to boycott all Nike products.  This is the way America works and this is the way America works best.  Everyone has their own individual rights to express and exercise how they want without the fear of repercussion from the government. Democracy is not easy my friends if it were everyone, would do it.  God Bless America!

Crazy Last Couple of Days

Hand up I am not a supporter of President Trump, I am a democrat and I am pretty liberal, but that being said I do believe that I do possess common sense, intelligence, and most importantly empathy for others.  That being said I am a pretty positive person and I love America and what it means to be an American.  To me, the idea of being an American is lost on a lot of the citizens.  If you were born in America congratulations, you won life’s lottery and are afforded rights and freedoms for nothing more than being born in the right place at the right time.  Therefore instead of flaunting these freedoms and being offended by every little thing that happens, I’m talking to both sides here, how about we be thankful for the blessings that we have and as Jesus said help and look out for the least of our brothers.  Americans need to exercise their rights and demand that our elected officials do better and represent us in a better light for all of the world.

America needs to step up its game in all facets if we are to be seen as a superpower again in the world.  The actions of our government show that they have zero empathy for any of the refugees that are showing up at our borders fleeing violence in their home countries.  The fact that our leaders hide behind the fact that some of these people maybe MS-13 or other gangs is ludicrous! We are a country of immigrants so we as a people owe it to our ancestors to help immigrants and refugees to get to safety and be able to eat, sleep, and live under our blanket of freedom.  The pilgrims were the original refugees fleeing religious persecution and that was when they landed on Plymouth rock.  We as citizens of the United States of America need to stand up and demand that our country take care of the 95% that are here to make a better life for their families and not make them pay because a small percentage of the people may be here for the wrong reasons.

This is not a slam on Donald Trump’s administration, but I am sure that I will get blowback of “That’s the same thing Obama did!”  Which is another problem with our country that both sides of the aisle are content with two wrongs instead of listening and compromising for the betterment of the United States citizens.  I digress this is not the same as when Obama was in the Presidency, in fact, it was not the same as any administration since the law was enacted in 1997.  The law was put in effect to capture and deport dangerous people, the biggest difference is that President Trump broadened the interpretation of the law to include “criminal offenses” which is applicable to anyone trying to enter the country since they would be doing so illegally.  The broader language is not prioritizing criminal offenses, a first-time offense of illegal immigration is a misdemeanor, so everyone is subject to deportation.  When the Attorney General Jeff Sessions rolled out his zero-tolerance policy in April the numbers of separations of families at the border skyrocketed because they no longer prioritized crimes, misdemeanors were treated the same as felonies.

What Corey Lewandowski did on the state-run news that is referred to as Fox News is unbelievably disgusting.  Fox was having a debate between Lewandowski, President Trump’s campaign manager, and Former DNC Adviser Zak Petkanas as Petkanas was recounting a story where a 10-year old girl with down syndrome was ripped from the arms of her mother at the border an attempt to try and highlight the atrocities that are occurring at the border.  In the middle of the story, Lewandowski mocks the little girl, her family, and Petkanas by saying “womp, womp”.  At best he has zero feeling for the little girl and her family that are trying to come into the United States for a better life.  At worst he is mocking the child because of her disability, which is of course he thinks is ok since his boss did the same on the campaign trail.  As a guy that has dedicated himself to helping children with disabilities the actions of Lewandowski make me want to puke.  This is the picture of cruelty and bullying of someone that had no power over the way they were born.  Lewandowski tried to come out today and not apologize to the child or the family for his disgraceful actions but rather rationalize them that he was mocking Petkansas.  If this is true, which I doubt, it shows how low mainstream media has fallen that they would allow this type of action on a show that is meant to inform people of the travesty that is happening at the border of our country.  The President should come out and admonish the actions of Lewandowski since he was his campaign manager.  In case you did not see the video I linked it below.

After weeks of digging in on his policy that separated families at the border, President Trump today finally after feeling the pressure signed an executive order that will keep more families together.  All though it took a while to find his conscience I do applaud him for signing this order to keep families united.  There are two things that the order does that are good, families are detained together and families cases are moved to the front of the court caseload.  There are also two things that the order does not do reunite families already separated and they do not know how the DHS is going to house them but at least it is a start to reverse this terrible policy.  One of the biggest problems with the previous policy was that children were only allowed to be detained for twenty days so then they were separated from their families and place into the system and therefore very hard to be reunited.  You can imagine the difficulty of reuniting children with their families when the children do not even know their parent’s full names, it takes weeks even months.  President Trump has ordered AG Jeff Sessions to go to the court and get Flores vs Reno overturned so that children can stay with their families for the duration of their detention.  This will go a long way toward solving the problem of family separation.

As many of you have noticed, I have not written on this site for a while as I have begun writing for a website 4thquarter17.wordpress.com The posts there will be sports related while I will still be talking about cooking and everything else on here, I will include some sports talk too.

I want to open with, I love this country and everything that it stands for, especially the Constitution.  When you look at what the Constitution enables us to do and the mobility and opportunity it allows each and every citizen compared to other countries in the world it is amazing.  That is why it infuriates me beyond belief when people that should be encouraging young people to exercise their rights, looking at you Laura Ingraham from Fox News, are putting these young people down and trying to discourage them from being Americans.

David Hogg is a survivor of the shooting at Majory Stonemen High School and he is a lead activist for gun reform in the United States.  He is leading peaceful protests for change not Democratic or Republican change but American change.   I am not concerned with whether or not you think gun reform will stop the school shootings or not, this is not a blog discussing the two sides of the argument.   This is a blog that is discussing why some people think it is ok for them to have rights and others should just “shut up and dribble.”  I applaud both sides of this issue and the people that are exercising their rights by peacefully demonstrating and asking for a change to protect our children in these dangerous times.  That is why it appalls me that a person in Ms. Ingraham’s position would attack a student that is trying to elicit change by leading peaceful protests.  Instead of celebrating him and the other students for being better Americans than 90% of the citizens, she attacked him personally because she doesn’t agree with his point of view.

I love and hate reading social media at times like these, I read posts and shares by people that I really respect and the attacks on these kids are unbelievable.  As an American and a veteran of the United States military, I love it when people express their rights to peacefully protest and express their opinions which are well within their rights as an American to do.  People asked me during the football season what my opinion of was of the players that were kneeling during the national anthem, I responded consistently that it did not bother me at all.  I was in the military and went to Iraq to defend their right to peacefully protest.  These students should be celebrated in the same way and not personally attacked by anyone especially a member of the national media.  Fox News and Laura Ingraham especially have become the old man yelling, “get off my lawn!”  They are lead organization that wants the status quo and will attack anyone that is fighting for change.  They basically want everyone to sit down shut up and do what they are told instead of expressing themselves and fighting for what they believe in.  They preach being American and then personally attack anyone that does not agree with them.

The essence of America was summed up in one sentence in a movie called The American President. “You want free speech?  Let’s see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, and who’s standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours.” Free speech has to go both ways and if it is to be productive can not divulge into name calling, which happens in Washington 90% of the time.  For free speech to work, there needs to be an honest and open discussion with the same end goals in mind.

I applaud people like David Hogg, LeBron James, and Colin Kaepernick keep exercising your right to peacefully protest.  You do not have to agree with their protest but you as an American should at the very least respect their position and cause.  I will lead the charge to never support any company that sponsors the @Ingrahamangle on Fox News.  Keep fighting the good fight ladies and gentlemen fight for change and keep exercising your rights, especially the right to vote this spring and next November.

The Peters’s household is going clean and stop using products with chemicals in them.  There will be many updates on this going forward.

This is not going to be a normal blog, the usual sports, and lame stuff I do will have to wait until the end.  This week we suffered a tragedy as an American society that we face all too often.  I started typing a different sort of blog yesterday, one that was written from a place of anger and sadness.  The blog, I will let you read it if you would like, was not going to achieve what I feel this blog should.   I wrote a blog last week that talked about culture bringing people together.  The blog that I started yesterday was a total one-sided response to a problem where there are no easy answers.  What happened in Florida and what has happened in schools far too often cannot be allowed to happen again.  We as a society must do everything in our power to protect our greatest asset, our children.  I do not know the answer whether it be gun control, mental health help, better security at schools, not publicizing the suspects or whatever it may be.  The one thing that I am sure of is that we are never going to have a solution if we are torn apart as a country.  Our elected leaders need to come together and bring our country together to find a solution to all of the violence in our country.  Now is the time for our elected leaders to stand up and do whatever is necessary to protect our children.  They need to put aside their differences for the safety of our children because if nowhere else they should feel safe at two places home and school.  In my original write, I was going to make this highly political and therefore be part of the problem, but I am choosing to be part of the solution to finding an answer to this epidemic.  Listening to the response from the leaders of our country it did not sound to me like they, Democrats and Republicans, were willing to put aside politics to keep our children safe.

It is at times like this that our country shows that we are mightier than the evil that befalls it.  At times like this, we as a country work as one no matter our differences to do what is needed to help other Americans.  America is the greatest country in the world and we are like one big family, that may at times get upset and frustrated with each other but if there is an attack on one of us it is an attack on all of us, and we take it personally.  Remember 9/11, Sandy Hook, Columbine, Boston Bombings, or Newtown?  It did not matter your race, ethnicity, gender, or religion we were all Americans doing whatever it took to help our fellow Americans, wouldn’t it be great if we could have that attitude every day and not only when tragedy strikes?  Our leaders need to be unifiers and not dividers going forward, they need to understand there is no right way or wrong way there is only the American way and what is best for American citizens and most importantly American children.

On to more lighter things, pitchers and catchers reported this week which means 43 days until opening day.  The tribe is looking good again, all of our main pitchers are back, but we lost Jay Bruce and Carlos Santana to free agency.  I like the look of this club it should be an interesting summer and hopefully fall here in Cleveland.

Erin and I have been enthralled with the Olympics from South Korea.  I was never an extreme sports guy but I caught the halfpipe men’s and women’s final. These guys and gals are nuts the way they flip and turn is amazing.  Sean White and Chloe Kim both brought home the gold.  White’s third run which he needed to get the gold was amazing as you can see here:

Chloe Kim was equally impressive as she dominated her way to gold.  This was her run even as she already had the gold medal wrapped up:

The guy that is stealing the show with his exuberance and showmanship is Adam Rippon.  He had a great run last night in men’s figure skating landing a number of different tricks, but the greatest part of Adam Rippon is post-program interviews. He calls the reporters by their first name, for instance when he was asked how he liked the Olympics, he looked the reporter right in the eye and said, “Andrea, it’s pretty amazing!”

Here is a video of his performance that had the crowd rocking and the post-performance interview:

On Fat Tuesday Erin and I went to Fiesta Jalapeno in North Ridgeville.  Erin loves Mexican food, I’ll eat it but I’m not as big a fan.  It was good the decor was nice but not too over the top.  They give you all the chips and salsa that you can handle, which is bad for me since I have no willpower to say no.  I got three soft shell chorizo tacos, I did like the tacos because they just come with cheese and meat and then you add your own vegetables from the taco bar.  Great idea!  Overall the experience was nice and we will probably go back again.  I am instituting a new rating system of shamrocks, 5 being the best that you can get so I give Fiesta Jalapeno  ☘️☘️

That is all for today, wow that was a tough one to write.  Thoughts and prayers to the families of the victims of this terrible tragedy and also to the survivors from the school. Remember this America and its citizens will always be there for you.  I will close with two things, first do not judge others for you have no idea what battle they are fighting within themselves and number two smile and say hello to everyone it takes no effort and you never know being nice may just save that person from the depths of depression.  Lastly, if you are feeling depressed talk to someone talk to anyone if you need to talk to me through this blog or my Twitter account @WCPeters_1, my DMs are always open. Parents talk to your children let them know that they are never alone.  The most underused word in the world is Love, tell someone you love them and mean it.  I know I am guilty of not telling the people that I love that I love them enough, plus love heals all.

Love you guys have a great week!

Cheers!! 🍀🍀
