I had the extraordinary experience of going to the Pro Football Hall of Fame luncheon with my father today.  It was a great time with some great old guys.  The speaker today was Sean Lewis the new Head Football Coach at Kent State University, my alma mater.  Coach Lewis is 31 and his background includes playing at Wisconsin for Barry Alverez.  He got his first full-time coaching job at Eastern Illinois with Dino Babers, and stayed with Coach Babers at Eastern Illinois, Bowling Green, and also at Syracuse before coming to Kent State.  He talked about his plan with regards to how he was going to build Kent into a winner.  He talked with enthusiasm and passion and how he plans to build the program up with kids from right here in Northeast Ohio.  I am super excited to watch the Golden Flashes in action this fall.  I think Coach Lewis will bring an exciting brand of offense to Dix Stadium and finally we can take part in the #MACtion unlike the 10 points a game that we have been averaging the past few years.  I remember November 23, 2012, the day after Thanksgiving watching the people pile into Dix Stadium to support the Flashes as they wrapped up the Eastern Division against the Ohio University Bobcats.  What a sight it was and also a shame that the alumni and supporters of Kent State have only been a part of three winning seasons in the last 30 years and two bowl games in last 46 years, 1972 and 2012.  One day soon I would like to get Coach Lewis on the blog as an interview guest to fully explain his vision and plan for the program.  In the meantime, Spring Practice starts March 6th and the Spring Game is April 14th at 11 am, so mark your calendar’s and I’ll see you there at Dix Stadium.

Today is the first workout for the full squad at Spring Training for the Cleveland Indians.  I love this for two reasons, one is that I think it is going to be another fun summer in downtown Cleveland and two it is that much closer to spring and getting out of the doldrums of winter.  In my opinion, the Indians have been the smartest team in baseball in the last few years by locking up their good young players in multi-year deals before they can hit free agency.  Also, they very rarely overpay for a veteran and opt for developing a younger player instead which has led to some subpar seasons but we are reaping the fruits of that system now.  Not to mention we have beyond a shadow of a doubt the best manager in the game of baseball, Terry Francona.  Since he has gotten here our August/September’s have been incredible, to include winning an AL record 25 games in a row last year.  I do believe that we will miss the loss of our pitching coach Mickey Calloway, who went on to be the manager of the New York Mets, coincidentally my favorite team in the NL.  Our pitching staff is second to none led by returning Cy Young Award winner Cory Kluber, and if we can muster an above average offense the Indians will once again win the Central Division and 100 games again.  Here is to another season of fun in the sun and watching the Indians dominate the American League.

I do not care who you are or who you root for we can all appreciate this:

The Cleveland Cavaliers made some moves before the trade deadline and one of them seems to be injecting some energy into LeBron James.  The Cavs got rid of six players Isaiah Thomas, Dwayne Wade, Derrick Rose, Channing Frye, Jae Crowder, and Iman Shumpert and got younger and more athletic with the additions of Rodney Hood, George Hill, Larry Nance Jr., and Jordan Clarkson.  The last four games they won before the All-Star break included blowing out the Boston Celtics and beating the Oklahoma City Thunder on the road.  The whole Cavs organization seems to be revitalized and I for one cannot wait until they embark on the “second half” of the season, which is really only 28 games.  As of today, the Cavs sit at 34-22 and in third place 6.5 games behind the Raptors and 4.5 games behind the Celtics.  I think the only real threat to the Cavs in the Eastern Conference is the Celtics, but we have the best player in the game and will win that series in 4 or 5 games.  The Cavs also have two roster spots open for bought out veterans from other teams to help in the playoffs and against whoever comes out of the West.  This summer is going to be awesome watching the Cavs in the finals again and the Indians marching to the playoffs.

So at the Pro Football Hall of Fame luncheon today, of course, they served lunch if you could call it that.  It was baked fish, a triangle of fish and an acute triangle at that, a 1/2 scoop of mashed potatoes, and some vegetables and a bun.  For dessert, wait for it now a scoop of chocolate ice cream unless you ask for vanilla then they will get it for you, so nice of them.  Lunch isn’t much when they get into the program for the day that is when the real fun starts, according to the regulars they try to have a video every week and it never works, but today it did work except that it was the video from about four weeks ago, fail.   They do send the week’s video in an email to all of the members which is nice, here’s to hoping all of the 70+-year-old members can open the video from their email or open their email at all or remember their email to open it.  The speakers and the camaraderie at the luncheon are well worth the price of admission and of course my father is the center of his table and all the guys love him.  On the Shamrock scale, the Pro Football Hall of Fame Luncheon gets ☘️☘️☘️☘️ for the speakers and the members the lunch not so much.  Next week Ray Lewis, Randy Moss, and Bob Brazile will be there representing the Hall of Fame Class for this year along with John Fankhouser the Head Football Coach at Walsh University.
